However, it uses a coded language. A simple visual inspection can save you a lot of trouble, but you still need to understand what you&#8217;re seeing.  <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of simple tips to help you easily decode what your roof is trying to tell you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1- Clean and unobstructed drains<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Drains must allow water to flow freely. Make sure there is no debris or residue around the drains. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>2- Presence of vegetation and debris<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A roof that does not allow water to drain easily will tend to encourage the growth of moss or certain plants. This buildup creates an environment conducive to mold growth and must be removed. Remove branches, leaves, or any other material that could compromise the quality of your roof.  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>3- Bumps and Cracks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to be an expert to notice them. These cracks or dents in the waterproofing membrane will need to be repaired quickly, as water is likely seeping in at these spots. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>4- Projections<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Check the seals around all protrusions. Inspect vents, chimneys, air conditioners, skylights, antennas, solar panels, lightning rods, etc. These are generally the areas most likely to let water in.  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>5- Check the flashings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Make sure the flashings are securely fastened and free of damage or rust.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6- Caulking<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Make sure the caulking is still flexible, present in sufficient quantity, and free of cracks.
